Most people searching for a Chatbase alternative are escaping one of three things. Knowing which one decides the answer.

**TL;DR.** On 14 October 2026 Chatbase plans started at $32 a month billed yearly for 700 message credits. People switch for cost at volume, data location or helpdesk depth. On WordPress, AI Engine is the first alternative: free, mature, 90,000+ installs. Support teams fit Tidio Lyro or Intercom Fin; flow builders fit Botpress. If none of the three pressures applies, staying on Chatbase is sound.

The best Chatbase alternative depends on where your site lives and what you are trying to escape. For WordPress, the first one to try is AI Engine: free, mature and excellent, with 90,000+ active installations on its [WordPress.org listing](https://wordpress.org/plugins/ai-engine/) when I read it on 14 October 2026, and a Pro version that builds knowledge bases from your own pages and PDFs. For a support team that already runs a helpdesk, an AI agent attached to that helpdesk, such as Tidio's Lyro or Intercom's Fin, usually fits better than a separate bot. For teams that want to design conversations as flows, Botpress is the established option. Chatbase itself, whose plans started at $32 a month billed yearly for 700 message credits on its [pricing page](https://www.chatbase.co/pricing) that same day, remains a sound choice for many sites. I am building a WordPress chatbot called DFYe, which is not on sale, so read the comparison knowing that, and knowing it is not on the list.

## Why do people look for a Chatbase alternative?

In conversations with site owners and in support forums, three reasons come up again and again.

**Cost as volume grows.** Chatbase prices by message credits. On 14 October 2026 the yearly-billed plans were Hobby at $32 a month for 700 credits, Standard at $120 for 4,000 and Pro at $400 for 15,000, with extra credits at $40 per 1,000 on auto-recharge. A small site rarely notices. A busy shop that crosses its allowance in week two does.

**Data location.** With a hosted platform, your content is copied into the vendor's index and conversations are stored there. Some owners prefer everything to stay inside their own site and hosting, for privacy, for control or simply to avoid one more processor in their records. Our post on [whether AI chatbots are GDPR compliant](/blog/are-ai-chatbots-gdpr-compliant/) explains why that processor chain matters.

For a shop, the most common action is order lookup, and [checking WooCommerce order status safely](/blog/chatbot-that-checks-woocommerce-order-status/) shows what a replacement must handle.

**Helpdesk depth.** Chatbase hands conversations to people through its own helpdesk features. Teams that already live in Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk or HubSpot often want the AI inside the tool where their agents already work.

If none of these applies to you, the honest advice is to stay where you are.

## Which Chatbase alternatives are worth considering?

| Option | Best for | Why it works | Main limit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AI Engine (WordPress plugin) | WordPress sites wanting everything inside WordPress | Free core, 90,000+ installs, many model providers including local ones | Knowledge bases and function calling are Pro features; you manage model keys |
| Tidio with Lyro | Small shops wanting live chat plus an AI agent | Free plan with limited Lyro use; WordPress plugin with 70,000+ installs | AI is one part of a chat and helpdesk product; costs rise with volume |
| Intercom Fin | Support teams with an existing helpdesk | Works with Intercom, Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and others; outcome-based pricing | Built for support organisations, not small brochure sites |
| Botpress | Teams designing multi-step conversation flows | Visual builder, free plan with 100 conversations a month | More to build and learn than a drop-in widget |
| Build your own with an API | Developers with specific needs | Full control over retrieval, prompts and data | You own hosting, security, logging and maintenance |

AI Engine deserves the first sentence of any WordPress comparison, and it gets it here. It connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenRouter and others, and through an OpenAI-compatible connector to local servers such as Ollama or llama.cpp. Its Pro version adds knowledge bases with automatic chunking and support for vector databases such as Chroma, Qdrant and Pinecone. For a WordPress site that wants a capable chatbot without a monthly platform fee, it is the obvious first test.

[Tidio's WordPress plugin](https://wordpress.org/plugins/tidio-live-chat/) shows 70,000+ active installations and a free plan that includes its Lyro AI agent with limited interactions, with paid plans from $29 a month according to the listing. It is a live chat product first, with AI added, which suits shops that want people and a bot in the same inbox.

[Intercom's Fin](https://fin.ai/) is an AI agent for support teams that works with Intercom natively and with other helpdesks including Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk, priced on outcomes rather than seats. It belongs in the conversation for organisations with a real support function, and is more than a small site needs.

[Botpress](https://botpress.com/pricing) offers a free plan with 100 conversations a month and paid plans that include an AI usage allowance. It suits teams that want to design structured flows, such as qualification or booking, rather than drop in a question-answering widget.

## How do the pricing models differ?

| Product | Pricing unit | Entry point read 14 October 2026 | What grows the bill |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Chatbase | Message credits per month | Hobby, $32 a month billed yearly, 700 credits | More conversations, extra agents, branding removal |
| AI Engine | Free plugin, Pro licence; you pay the model provider | Free core | Your own token usage; Pro for knowledge bases |
| Tidio | Plan tiers with AI interactions | Free plan; paid from $29 a month | Lyro conversation volume and seats |
| Intercom Fin | Per outcome | Not listed on the product page | Number of resolved conversations |
| Botpress | Conversations plus AI usage | Free, 100 conversations a month; Plus $150 a month billed yearly | Conversation packs and AI spend |

The units matter more than the entry prices. Credit and conversation models are predictable until volume spikes. Bring-your-own-key models like AI Engine charge you only what the model provider charges, which is usually far less per answer, but you carry the setup and the monitoring. Outcome pricing aligns the vendor with resolutions, which is attractive at scale and hard to forecast at the start. Our breakdown of [what an AI chatbot actually costs](/blog/how-much-ai-chatbot-cost/) shows how raw model usage compares with subscription prices.

## What should you check before switching?

Before moving away from any hosted chatbot, list what it does for you today, because the replacement has to do all of it.

1. **Sources.** Which pages, documents and help articles feed the bot, and how often are they re-read?
2. **Actions.** Does it look up orders, book calls or create tickets? Each action is an integration to rebuild.
3. **Handover.** Where do conversations go when the bot cannot help, and who answers them?
4. **Channels.** Website only, or also WhatsApp, Messenger, email and Slack?
5. **Logs.** Can you export past conversations? They are your best test set for the new bot.
6. **Compliance.** Which processors handle the messages, and where? Update your records when that changes.

Then run both bots side by side on the same set of real questions for a week before switching the widget. The [mechanics of how a RAG chatbot retrieves answers](/blog/what-is-rag-ai-chatbot/) explain why two bots reading the same site can answer the same question differently.

## Can you move a Chatbase setup onto WordPress?

Mostly, because the valuable parts are yours rather than the platform's. The sources are your own pages and documents, which any WordPress chatbot can read again. The instructions you wrote, the tone, the topics to refuse, the handover rules, can be copied into a new system prompt. The past conversations are the most useful asset of all: export them and use the real questions as a test set for the replacement.

What does not move is the platform glue: actions wired to Chatbase's integrations, its analytics history and any channel connections outside the website. Rebuild those deliberately, one at a time, rather than all at once on launch day.

## When should you stick with Chatbase?

Chatbase is the right choice more often than a "Chatbase alternative" search suggests, and saying so is part of a fair comparison.

If you want one hosted agent across your website, WhatsApp, Messenger, Slack and email, with no infrastructure, no model keys and no plugin updates, Chatbase does that well. Its homepage states GDPR compliance, an independent SOC 2 Type II audit and that customer data is not used to train models. If your volume fits a plan comfortably, the cost argument disappears.

It is also the better choice for sites that are not on WordPress at all. AI Engine is a WordPress plugin, and a static site, a Webflow site or a custom app gets nothing from it.

Switch only when one of the three pressures is real for you: the bill at your volume, the data location, or the helpdesk depth. Switching for its own sake costs a week of setup and testing that rarely pays back.

## Where does DFYe fit?

It does not, yet. DFYe is the WordPress chatbot I am building in public. It does not ship, nothing on this site is for sale, and it would be dishonest to put it in a table of things you can install.

What I can say is what it is designed to be, so you can judge the approach rather than the product: it runs inside WordPress, reads the site's own pages into passages, answers from one of them and shows that passage as the citation, and refuses what the site does not support. That is a different shape from a hosted platform. Whether it is a better shape is something only a shipped product and real measurements can show, and I will publish those when they exist, alongside the [state of the WordPress chat plugin market](/blog/wordpress-chat-plugin-market-2026/) we track.

## Key takeaways

People leave Chatbase for three reasons: cost as volume grows, wanting data inside their own site, or needing deeper helpdesk integration. On WordPress, try AI Engine first, free and mature with 90,000+ installs. For support teams with a helpdesk, Tidio's Lyro or Intercom's Fin attach AI where agents already work. Botpress fits teams designing flows. Compare pricing units, not entry prices, list everything the current bot does before switching, and test both on real questions for a week. If none of the three pressures applies to you, Chatbase is still a sound choice.

## Quick answers

### What is the best Chatbase alternative?

For a WordPress site, AI Engine is the first alternative to try: it is free, mature, shows 90,000+ active installations on WordPress.org, and its Pro version adds knowledge bases from your own content. For a support team that already runs a helpdesk, an AI agent attached to that helpdesk, such as Tidio Lyro or Intercom Fin, usually fits better. Botpress suits teams that want to design flows.

### Why do people look for a Chatbase alternative?

Usually for one of three reasons: cost as message volume grows, wanting the data and index inside their own site rather than on a hosted platform, or needing a deeper helpdesk with ticketing and human handover. Chatbase is a capable product, and on 14 October 2026 its plans started at 32 dollars a month billed yearly for 700 message credits, which is where the cost question usually begins.

### Is there a free alternative to Chatbase?

Yes, with caveats. AI Engine is free on WordPress, though you pay your own model provider for usage and the knowledge-base features are in its Pro version. Tidio has a free plan with limited Lyro AI interactions. Botpress has a free plan with 100 conversations a month. Free usually means either a usage cap or that you supply the API key and pay for tokens yourself.

### When should you not switch away from Chatbase?

When it already fits, and that is more often than the search suggests. If you want a hosted agent across website, WhatsApp, Slack and email with no infrastructure, and your volume fits a plan, Chatbase is a reasonable choice. It states GDPR compliance and a SOC 2 Type II audit. Switching only makes sense when one of its limits, cost, data location or helpdesk depth, actually affects you.

### Is DFYe a Chatbase alternative?

Not yet. DFYe is a WordPress chatbot plugin I am building in public, and it does not ship, so it is not something you can install or buy today. Its design is a different shape from Chatbase, running inside WordPress with citations from the site's own pages, but until it ships the honest list of alternatives is the one in this post.
